Scoring Details

In general, these were our objectives:

  • a) We wanted to be liberal - points are fun, and we want fun!
  • b) We wanted to be fair - judgements will be made, but we expect impartial decision making.
  • c) We wanted to be consistent - past rulings should match future rulings.
So to help us keep to these goals, we created a Scoring Matrix. This is also known as a Technical Performance Measurement(TPM). This is a tool that will help us evaluate, measure and communicate the scoring decision.

The TPM works by listing and adding weights to decision criteria. Each criterion should be measureable and given its own sub-score and value from 1-100. This is then multiplied against the criteria weight. Finally, everything is summed up for a total decision score.

This total score is used to determine thumbs up or thumbs down. Think ice skating scores. Ultimately it is a subjective decision, but there is an attempt at standardization by creating a numerical score.

The idea behind a TPM, is that any decision can be reduced to smaller sub-decisions. By adding weights and measureable criteria, we can minimize variance and add consistency to the weekly rulings. A TPM also provides detail and insight to the decision making process, by adding a level of visibility and transparency into the "why" of the choice.
