Ratings

Because I am shallow, I feel compelled to rate each players' attractiveness on a scale of 1-10. Of course the scale isn't based on your typical every day people. Wes might be almost good looking in real life, but compared to the other guys on the challenge he is on the low end of the ratings. Also height can help you a lot if you're a guy, so though Landon might have a better face than Kenny, he is short which prevents him from being rated as more attractive.

Looks was by far the biggest factor for me in this draft. And judging by the top three teams in the league, this could be an important trend to watch! I'm sure Victor could put together a lovely spreadsheet with looks and some other factors (race, athletic ability, etc.) to determine winners, but of course looks are subjective. One person's stud could be another person's dud.

Here is what I think. Let me know if you agree/disagree.

Males
Pete - 8.5
CJ - 8.5
Kenny - 8
Landon - 8
Vinny - 8
Jeff - 7
Ryan - 6
Danny - 6
Darrell - 5.5
Luke - 5
Noor - 4.5
Brandon - 4
Wes - 4

Females
Jenn - 9
Laurel- 7.5
Sarah - 7.5
Cara Maria - 7
Theresa - 7
Jillian - 6.5
Mandi - 6.5
Carly - 5.5
Paula - 5.5
Sydney - 5
Sandy - 4.5
Evelyn - 3
Katelynn - 1.5

First of all, I love this! I'm sure the Challenge producers probably had a similar scale to help them with casting.

For the most part, I'd say these numbers are accurate. I'd move Darrell to a 7 though...5.5 is awfully low. And I think Danny used to be a hot 8 when he premiered on the Real World, but yes, the years (and probably Melinda) have not been kind.

For the girls, I think Sarah should move to 6.5. She's not all that looks-wise, but she is fun.

And Katelynn's 1.5 might be undeserved in the tranny world. You should ask a tranny to be fair.

I will do some tranny research asap!

Also, I think I was doing most of my ratings based on just the one photo of them from the cast bios on mtv, which is kind of a terrible angle for Darrell's dome, so I could move him to a 6.

I think Sarah has a really pretty face, but you're right... 7.5 might be a bit high. I could stand to change it to a 7.

I think everyone should weigh in on the google doc.

I’ve met Evelyn in person, and she’s gorgeous and very confident. Like she has perfect skin tone with a nice and even tan, like someone who has time to sit near beach, nice legs nice body. And I don’t think she’s really lesbian, there’s a vibe she has that is off the charts. She told me she didn’t want to know my name, b/c she wouldn’t remember it. She also told me that she likes to suck mochi balls and roll them around in her mouth. Like who says that?

But anyways, I think for girls, you need to emphasize the body a bit and take that in account. Like Theresa is hot, like sneaky hot, so I agree with your rating. But like from her facial picture, she’s only ok. She does have a sensual vibe when she talks, and her body is smoking, excellent lines. I don’t think Sarah is in the same league a Cara Maria, and Sarah has like a different body type to be an elite level girl…you know? I mean, excluding personality factors, I feel like the average guy would find someone who looks like a Mandi more f***able than someone who looks like a Sarah.

I am impressed with your TG research…haha, I was going to agree with Yas, Katelynn could be the kate moss of that world, but you never know.

Overall one should be careful with ratings, you could push someone’s buttons and hit a sensitive spot. All in fun in games right? > _^ This reminds one time in college when we were young and stupid, a bunch of asian guys made a ranking list of the asian freshmen girls and it got leaked! I didn’t go to a mich or Berkeley with substantial Asian American population. We had maybe < 100 asians per class so it was a small circle. (BTW, as contrast AA population is about 3-4% over the entire country).

The end result was that a bunch of the asian girls decided to stop hanging out with us “asian guy losers” and boy did that make it hard to find dates to the formal. Surprisingly, ppl don’t take too kindly to being ranked based on looks.

For some reason, Mandi's strong jawline stood out to me. And I considered how Cara Maria had poked fun at her during "Meet the Meat" for primping and wearing a lot of makeup.

I think Evelyn has a weird face.

What kept Laurel from being more attractive was the "Aftershow" appearance where I discovered that she is 6'3. That falls into the "too tall" category for women.

F-ability is a totally different conversation that I would have to put more thought into.

I still want to see your ratings!

Oh gosh... I hope they aren't reading this stuff! Laurel could kick my a$$!

I'm curious...what height do you think crosses the line for being "too tall" for a woman?

Wikipedia happens to keep stats on height, check it out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height

The mean avg height for US Males is 5’9.5, while US Females is 5’4. It is not on the Wikipedia site, but I also looked up the standard deviation for height and determined that it is normally distributed(bell curve), so with an sigma value of 2.8 inches, that means roughly that 2/3 of the population of males are within the range of 5’6.8 – 6’0.3, and females within the range of 5’1.2 – 5’6.8.

I think that’s a fairly decent benchmark for the eyeball, where if you looked around the room and 2/3 of the ppl were within a certain range in the middle, with the rest standing out. So I’m thinking, too tall for women starts around 5’7. That’s my quantitative answer, or 1 sigma above the mean average height for women in the US.

However, there is a qualitative side, and I don’t know how to speak to it with as much confidence. Namely, heels can complicate things. Women in generally have a strong sense of awareness and tendency to "not rock the boat" when it comes to sticking out like a sore thumb. With heels, shorter women can easily bump themselves into the "average" band, and taller women can elect to forgo heels to remain in the "average" band. So the result is with a quick eyeball scan, the 2/3 rules fails. Or rather, the perception of what is average height can get muddled. I suppose men also do a similar thing with dress shoes. Male dress shoes I believe can add another inch of height.

There’s a certain presence that gets conveyed with height, so women prefer to be tall in general, and also it helps capture the attention of taller males. However, the taller you try to get, the farther away from average you get and the fewer candidate males can be found. For instance, 6’1 isn’t necessarily an unusual height, but according to statistics, to find someone with a height of 6’1 and above, would require searching for < 15% of population. If you’re looking for a guy 6’3 and over, you’re already pushing 2 sigma, and you’re looking at < 3% of the population. It seems strange, b/c everyone can recall many friends of this height, but I suppose to be fair you need to recall all the ppl you know and stick them in a room and then count. So there is a too tall zone, and if Laurel is 6’3(maybe she’s not, more on this later), for her to find a guy her height means, she’d have to parse though 33 guys on average randomly before even meeting a candidate.

But you do have smaller subsets and group, like for supermodels the ideal height is actually pretty tall. Like up to 6ft. I suppose it gives then presence and also elongates their bodies to look even thinner. I’ve never been able to adequately measure the significance that they have on women and fashion, as well as self-esteem, but I’d imagine there’s likely some affect. Also I think going out to bars, you tend to find that ppl with “more relative” success, so you might expect to have a “tallness” self-selection effect. Taller ppl at bars, but don’t quote me on that, I’m just speaking anecdotally on this.

Thanks for the technical and statistical analysis, but I'm looking for personal opinion. I don't think most people would think 5'7" is too tall for a woman.

And I saw the spreadsheet, all 1s for the guys and a 10 for Wes? You have it bad.

I feel like taking personality into account would change so much. I mean, objectively CJ is probably very good looking but his zero in personality kinda hurts.

I think the "too tall" is more dependent on who the girl would want to date. I mean, Laurel is crazy tall (I really don't thinks she's 6'3 though) but I think quite possibly the most attractive girl. Height really doesn't matter, it really depends on how they carry it off. Plus, aren't, for example, models super tall? Meaning 5'10-6 ft minimum? I doubt one could say they are not attractive. More importantly, we should talk about this in context of Joe from RW Miami and his GF, which was quite the storyline this season.

Question: If Noor was six two, would he be getting play on this show? Or is it an ethnic thing?
Lastly, Victor giving 1s to every guy has skewed the rankings. Re-rank!

Being superficial is fun times, thanks HT!

Hmmm ok, I do agree after reflecting some more that 5'7 isn't that tall. I would then up it 2 sigma, or 5'10. That would roughly put these giraffes in the top 3% of the female height spectrum.

Kimberly said...

I think Noor's height and ethnicity are two strikes against him on this show. But hey, I'd take him over Wes any day.

I have an inability to separate out personality from attractiveness. While this has helped me out in everyday life, it makes filling out the Looks Spreadsheet kinda challenging. I tried to be as superficial as I could, honest, I tried.

jonyangorg said...

@kim Laurel got a five?! A five! The same as Paula? I think you've let some personality analysis slip in there!

Ok rant over.

Wes ranks so low, I think he's kinda good looking in a way...no?

Kimberly said...

Laurel has crazy eyes! I don't see how she can be attractive with those knife eyes looking out. And Laurel just looks blah to me. Plain brunette with knife eyes. Thus a five. And I don't think Paula's so bad. Not good, but not bad.

I think Wes is actually not an attractive guy, but that he has enough charm to make him seem like he's not that bad looking. Yes, I said it: charm.

i amuse myself... said...

We're only missing one person's ratings at this point. I am going to average all our scores and determine the best looking team again. I think Team Weiner is still looking strong. :)

Yasmine said...

Two 5's for Laurel? That has to be a personality critique.

George - 4 for Vinny, 8 for Wes?

Kim - 8 for Evelyn?

WHA??? You guys need your eyes checked.

i amuse myself... said...

Yasmine - with the additional ratings from everyone else, your team went from least attractive to second most attractive. Quite impressive.

jonyangorg said...

This is unfair, I have Katelynn, who is like an anchor to my attractiveness scale. Otherwise my team is quite beautiful no?

Kimberly said...

I think Evelyn is really pretty.

i amuse myself... said...

Katelynn is totally an anchor.
